Re: Hardy “Moocher” Aluminum Pontoon Boat

Dear Sir,

This letter is to let you know how pleased I am with the performance of the Hardy Moocher that I purchased from your company in January 2005.

The boat has exceeded all my expectations for safety, performance, and ease of handling. It is fitted with a 40hp Evinrude outboard with a permatrim.

We launch and retrieve the boat mainly at Titahi Bay on the beach and this is managed very easily by two people, in their sixties – even when there is a swell running. The trailer provided by Southern Engineering is ideal for this purpose as the boat remains centred from the outset. At boat ramps etc I can launch and retrieve the boat on my own without any problems. On one occasion we swamped the boat in the surf but it remained stable and upright.

We fish the area between Pukerua Bay, Mana Island and Ohau Point and at times go up to seven miles offshore! It is a stable fishing platform and lies true at anchor. The sea can sometimes cut up very quickly in this area but we have never had any concerns for our safety in the “Moocher”. This rugged little boat can handle seas from any quarter; it rides soft in a chop and tracks straight and true in a following sea.

It is hard to accept that this boat is only 4.15 metres long! It performs best with some extra weight on board and I can easily take two divers with all their gear, bottles, catch etc.  Divers find the boat easy to work from because of its agility around the rocks and the ease of getting back on board.

The “Moocher” is simply the best boat I have ever owned and I would be happy to take any prospective buyer for a test run. The staff at Southern Engineering were professional and helpful. Their after-sales assistance is excellent.

I recommend this boat to anyone seeking a safe, easily handled boat with “big” boat performance.

Yours sincerely

I purchased a Hardy 4.0 Moocher powered by a 30hp Suzuki 4 stroke specifically to fish on the Rotorua lakes and on the coast at Opotiki.

It has proven to be a revelation and attracts favourable comment wherever I go.

It is easy to launch and tows like a dream.

The boat is easy onto the plane and incredibly stable underway or at rest.

It is built like a brick outhouse with tremendous structural strength (welding and so on) that is a credit to Pete and his team’s workmanship.

It’s no nonsense looks suggest it can stand up to a lot of punishment and believe me it can!

I would highly recommend a Hardy pontoon boat to anyone wanting a solid, safe, roomy, stable and yet very exciting boat at a good honest price.

"In August 2004 I took delivery of my Hardy 4.0m pontoon boat. I required a boat that was both small enough for me to launch, retrieve and handle on my own off the open beach but large enough to take a couple of friends out fishing.

Because of the physical restraints of the garage at our beach place (a real Kiwi bach!), the boat on its trailer had to be below a certain height. Peter and his staff were only too happy to make some alterations to the trailer to overcome this problem, just as they were very willing to make changes to the basic layout of the boat itself to suit my personal needs.

The workmanship and finishing in the construction has been of a high standard gaining many favourable comments from friends and onlookers.

We have been delighted with the boat, both in terms of its handling performance underway and its stability as a fishing platform. Well done Southern Engineering and Marine, our Hardy 4.0m has given us many hours of pleasure and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this boat to any would-be purchaser."

Kind regards

After many years of fishing out of other peoples boats,I decided to purchase one for myself.

A friend of mine had just picked up a new Hardy 4metre,and after inspecting it,(a big little boat) I promptly went to see Peter at Southern Engineering & Marine and ordered a 4.7Metre boat which has been built and powered by a 50HP Suzuki 4 stroke.

I have had this boat now for 18months and have been amazed at its performance(50kph) and its all round stability,in fact at a recent fishing competition with two crew we sat at anchor in a 3-4 metre swell far more comfortably than many of the other boats fishing. These craft are simply outstanding and so stable, you can all look over the same side and watch the Hapuku come up(on my line)without any tendancy to roll at all.

It is light to tow, economical to run(15litres to go 20miles up thhe coast and return as well as a bit of trolling for Kahwhai) and one can easily handle it solo if required.

I use this boat at Castlepoint,Flat Point,Te Awaiti and Ngawi, all on the East Coast of the Wairarapa well known for its sudden weather changes.

Finally,I have found this to be a dry boat and would be happy to recommend it to anyone considering purchasing a boat.

After many years of fishing the South Wairarapa coast in crap boats, I decided on a new boat before my luck ran out. When heading back in one day wondering whether I was going to make it, I was passed by a very smart looking pontoon boat that was riding more like a mono hull. I turned to my very worried looking mate and said, “I want one of those.” He said, “good idea.” Upon further investigation I learnt it was a Hardy Pontoon built by Pete Snoeijer.

I called in to see Pete he seemed an ok bloke, and asked him about his boats, and different options. I

had a few critera , safety, value for money, abost for our conditions, and one we could take down the river, water sking etc.We decided one the 5.25 model. The finished boat has by far exceeded my

expectations. Great workmanship, easy to launch and handle, for a pontoon very soft riding (no pounding) dry which surprised me and looks dam good. I am no boat guru but it”s a very good boat for its size and I,m wrapped with it. I’d have no hesitation in recommending them and Pete’s service as well. Im looking forward to passing the next poor buggar with a worried look on his face.

I have owned a Southern Engineering Hardy 4.7 metre aluminium pontoon boat since December 2004. I decided to purchase a Hardy boat after carefully reviewing its price and specifications against other brands. Southern Engineering added a full rear bench seat and a ski pole as part of the deal. Its design is a real advantage when using it for beach launching.

I have used the boat extensively around Wellington, the Kapita Coast, Marlborough Sounds and Lake Taupo. It is easily launched by one person, extremely seaworthy, and light to tow. My family love it as it is easy to drive, and its stability is a bonus when using it as a diving and flyfishing platform.

I encourage anyone who is looking for a very robust, easy to clean and maintain, multi-purpose boat to consider one of the Hardy range.
